Villeneuve to V8 Supercars ??

Post by Deslotted »

Seems that Supercheap Racing is in current negotiations with Jacques Villeneuve to be teamate to Russell Ingall for the 2009 V8 Supercar season.
The man once descibed by Patrick Head as Having been 1997 World champ despite doing everything possible to blow it, in what was undoubtably the best car in F1 at the time, having failed in a bid to secure a Nascar drive has decided that a season in V8 Supercars is the thing to revive a career that has basically been beached since leaving Williams. It seems that figures of around $2 million are being bandied around!! Seems like a lot of Dosh. I think it's more of a publicity thing.
My money is on him getting hosed off and heading back to Monaco or Switzerland with whats left of his reputation in tatters. I shall be prepared to eat my words if I'm wrong, but apart from Larry Perkins and Alan Jones who was just bloody minded and a gritty so and so. The list of open wheeler stars who have lobbed in from Europe or the US and have been soundly thrashed has so far left me uninspired. ( I realise that AJ and LP are aussies but both went to F1 before coming to the ATCC)
When one thinks of some of the blokes in Australia who are sitting on the sidelines without a drive because they fail to raise a budget (theres more pays drives in V8's than people realise) well it all seems a bit daft.
If it does something to raise the profile of the sport in Oz amongst the uninitiated masses. that may be some consolation I suppose.

Well it`s a double edged sword, good to see the `the dirty dude` (smash up derby specialist) gone from this category, it may cut some teams budget a bit because they don`t have to repair a car he has hit for them.
But then again Villeneuve has been known to run into a few people in a lot more expensive equipment. Maybe it`s a pre-requisite to replace Paul.
`The Enforcer` is the best thing to ever happen to PM Motorsport. At least if Jacques gets the drive, Russell will always outperform him.
The money figure you mentioned more than likely won`t worry them, Terry will step in with a cheque book, obviously he`s not backward in paying the racing bills. So if Jacques is paying for his drive, at least the repairs for a year might be paid for!
As for him being a former F1 champ - as you have stated, he did a lot to try not to get there.
If he does get on the starting grid here, it won`t take long for him to get annoyed at no or poor results. And the young guns coming thru the field now will not get out of the way for him regardless.
But i must say it would be funny to see him try.

Quote from Jordan - `The Enforcer` is the best thing to ever happen to PM Motorsport

Full agreement there Jordan, after a couple of leanish years after the Championship win, the enforcer seems to have come alive again. So maybe the fit is mutually good all round. Even being slightly biased towards the blue end of the spectrum as I am, I must say I have had occasion to smile a bit this Year when Russ has been rattling a few of the Young Guns. Maybe I'm starting to turn red !!!
If they are paying 2 mill for JV, how many bottles of sirromet will they need to sell to afford him?
And why haven't We got a new Ingall slotcar Yet?

I know what you mean by blue end of the spectrum - me too.
I have followed Ford for all my racing interested time ( since 1998).
I have followed Lowndes since when he stepped into the `light` & and away from the dark side.
But i if they can drive like Brocky, LP, The Enforcer & so on , i really don`t care.
I must admit i wasn`t a fan of Ambrose even though he could drive the wheels off that AU.
But i love the 3 in row Bathurst from 888 with The Smiling Assasin & The Wunderkid.
And i still have the Ingall Castrol #9 commodore from scaley.
As for wine sales - they better be drinking heavy if/when Jacques comes on board
Can`t wait for the Clipsal 500 - it`ll be a cracker - the team moves - Courtney with DJR, The Davison Brothers in different teams, Frosty, CL & Whincups determination to keep #1 not to mention Darth Walkinshaw & his apprentices.
I am even sad Skaifey isn`t in the mix. :?:

And what about little Bargs back in the mix with Sprintgas, Should be an interesting garage what with the history between him and Murph. Philip Island in 02 I think for starters. I had to laugh at the Darth crack, My daughter calls Tander - Garth Vader, not too popular in this house I'm afraid despite being from West OZ.

I'm out in the back yard, burning food!!

This is the Villeneuve I wish I had seen in real life, Gilles.
They just don't drive F1 like that anymore. Anyone for oversteer?
For Me personally F1 seemed to go a bit dull after the lates 70's early 80's. More seventies F1 slotcars please.
